Formal Cause and Natural Teleology in Physics II
Abstract
The doctrine of the four causes set forth in Physics II is often reduced to an explanatory scheme. This article argues that formal and final causality are, in Aristotle, irreducible to later mechanism: nature operates from within, according to an internal principle of motion and rest, and the telos is not subjective projection but structure of the natural being itself.
